Dulcimer Workshop with Paul and Dee Andry- April 9-12
For the past twenty years Paul Andry has been teaching our mountain dulcimer workshop. Daily classes will consist of beginner’s workshops, followed by group classes for more experienced players. Guests are invited to participate in evening “jam” sessions.
Paul is Louisiana’s premier mountain dulcimer player and has done much for the dulcimer’s presence in his home state. He later won and placed in several dulcimer contests there, culminating in the 1994 Texas State Championship. Birding with Emilie Travis- April 21- 27
Event photo: Venture Birding, Skyland, NC
Emilie was born and raised in central NJ having always enjoyed watching birds but didn't discover the hobby of birding until she attended University of Vermont for a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and Forestry. Emilie was first "taken by" birds when a Double-Crested Cormorant fought back against being fit for a radio transmitter and "kissed" her lips. After graduating, Emilie birded her way between amphibian breeding grounds, acquiring some birding experience with several western species throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Emilie has assisted on bird banding projects in the northeast and midwest, gaining a tremendous amount of experience handling and identifying neotropical migrants. She acquired her Master's degree at the University of Wisconsin – Madison studying the impact of communication towers to migratory birds. Emilie has also assisted on a variety of other wildlife research projects over the past 12 years so if bird activity gets slow, she is guaranteed to be distracted by a salamander, trying to identify a tree, or looking under a rock. She currently resides in West Asheville, and when not hiking/birding/salamandering/frogging or practicing yoga, you can find Emilie outfitting folks for their adventures at REI. #SMLOutdoors... Waxing Poetic: Painting with Encaustic Medium by acclaimed Gulf Coast artist Kat Fitzpatrick
This is a workshop for the curious, the lover of color and beeswax, the artist and the beginner. Through the ancient medium of encaustic we will create small, portable works of art based on our Snowbird experience or whatever you can imagine. I will teach you collage, fusing, carving, excising, drawing into, the use of hand made stencils and transfers using your images or mine. Whether you stay a day or a week, there will be an encaustic art studio at your fingertips. I will provide all necessary materials and tools. All you need to bring is a willing and open mind and small black and white high contrast photocopies (if you want).
Join Gulf Coast artist Kat Fitzpatrick, M.A.Ed. in exploring the ancient(1800 year old) medium of encaustic. Beeswax melted with damar crystals and colorful pigment produces an ideal art medium that can be painted, carved or layered, creating collage with photo transfers, cool papers, personal artifacts. Complete beginners as well as experienced artists are gently guided to find ways to create encaustic images of deep beauty and mystery. Come with a playful attitude and some small high contrast black and white photocopies...maybe you as a child, your grandchild, a favorite tree or pet? Join us for a day or a week. #SMLArt...
